Tips from Change Magazine.
Mug up — Don't use
disposable cups. Take your own mug to work and slurp your tea out of china
Dust bust — If dust
builds up on the coils at the back of the fridge, it could use up to 30% more
energy than it needs, so clean them — now
Hot topic — Control
insects with a sprinkle of chili powder on the problem areas
Drink this in — Step
back in time and order milk from your milkman. His bottles are reused unlike
milk cartons and he drives an environmentally friendly electric float
Breathe easy — Keep an aloe Vera
plant. Not only is it good for healing cuts or burns, it also cleans the air of
some chemicals.
Batteries - Good news from Kathrin Holme
Hard persistence by
Kathrin has paid off for us all. There is now a household battery recycling
facility at West Kirby tip. It goes to show that people power does work, if
more of us were to write to shops/ companies/councils stating our views and
needs then maybe we consumers could gain some advantages for ourselves and
others.
Eco-nights
Please
keep two evening dates in your diary available in June: 11th and the 18th . We are showing two films, one on each date, the
first one is the Channel 4 film The Great Global Warming Swindle, it
argues the point that Global Warming is a normal reaction of our planet
during it's natural development and that the ozone layer, climate change is not
down to mans treatment of the world. The second film, shown on the 18th is called The
Inconvenient Truth and is a documentary by Al Gore. The film portrays
the "other view" that Global Warming is caused by us, and what we can
do to slow it down. We are charging £5
for a ticket to see both films, with tea and biscuits afterwards, the
proceeds going to the St Bridget’s Community Centre appeal. More details on the
posters, tickets from Sally Cashen, 625 2659, or Pipedreams.
Encourage wildlife into your garden in a few easy steps
Leave a comer of the
garden alone, allowing whatever springs up to stay there and piling in a few
logs, branches and leaves. This will attract beneficial bugs and even
hedgehogs.
Put
up nesting boxes and feeders out of reach of predators, and a variety of birds will soon move in, even in built up areas. Avoid the use of
chemicals to ensure a cleaner, safer environment for people, animals and plants. The best offence against pests is defence, for example, plant garlic or marigolds next
to roses to keep aphids away. Avoid slug pellets at all costs. They kill the
frogs, birds and other animals that eat slugs and snails Some plants are
especially loved by wildlife such as Carex flagellifera, Centranthus ruber and Echinacea purpurea, so
why not give them a go?
If you have items to
contribute to the green sheets please contact Sally on 0151 625 2659.
The
items included in the green sheets are for your information only, but we hope
that you find some of them useful.
